Schmucker - Smoker - Smucker 2006 Bus Tour Descriptions

TOUR ONE:
Friday, July 21, 2006-
Full Day- 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Tour of Lancaster and BerksCounties
Cost: $25 per person (includes box lunch)

CHRISTIAN SCHMUCKER, A COLONIAL PENNSYLVANIA FARMER IN HIS WORLD

An all day guided bus tour of the rural landscapes in Lancaster and Berks Counties.  Experience the setting of Christian Schmucker’s plantation plus his Ellmaker and Diller neighbors from the middle 18th century.Explore the vestiges from his children’s lives at the Leacock Presbyterian cemetery, the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Holland and the Blank (Plank) plantation and cemetery.After stopping at the popular Smucker harness shop, the tour travels northward into Berks County to see the homes of Christian’s son John at the Stoltzfus - Smucker House, the Heister property and the Stone House in Wyomissing. We close the day with a stop at Myers Cemetery where many of our ancestors are buried.

TOUR TWO:
Friday, July 21, 2006- Half Day- 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Tour of LancasterCounty
Cost: $20 per person
Travel on a bus for a 4-hour tour on
LancasterCounty’s 18th century cart ways to absorb our unique heritage.See the Old Philadelphia Pike one-room school, the plantations of Christian Schmucker and his Ellmaker and Diller neighbors. Learn about Old Peters Road and the warrants, surveys and land patents through the Penn Land Grants system. Stop at the Smucker harness shop to see leather crafting at its best and close the tour at the Myers Cemetery.

TOUR THREE:
Friday, July 21, 2006- Full Day- 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Amish and Mennonite Cultural Heritage

Cost: $25 per person (box lunch included)

Meet at the Mennonite Historical Society to view the “Plain and Decorated” Exhibit.Then go next door to the Mennonite Information Center to view the brief films “Who Are the Amish” and “Postcards from a Heritage of Faith.” After a box lunch, the bus will take a back roads route to visit a Mennonite church and stop to visit local Amish craftsmen at their shops.

OPTIONAL BERKS COUNTY TOUR*:
Thursday, July 20, 2006- Full Day- 7:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Tour of the Smucker/Stoltzfus, Hochstetler, and Hertzler homestead (and others) in Berks County. Hosted by the Masthof Press and Bookstore. Cost is $36.00 and includes a box lunch.
